How Is Green Tea Different Than Other Tea?

Fun fact: Green, black & oolong teas actually all come from the same plant! They are just harvested and prepared differently – each with a unique taste.

Tea contains polyphenols and catechins (epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG), which are natural compounds that have a long list of great health benefits. Unlike black tea, green tea does not go through the fermentation process and as a result, it has more antioxidants & catechins remaining in its leaves.

Matcha is Japanese green tea powder. It’s made from the whole leaf and contains a high concentration of healthy compounds.

Green tea is one of the most powerful drinks for wellbeing!

Why Should You Drink Green Tea?

There are so many potential health benefits to drinking green tea. Green tea and matcha may

  1. Reduce inflammation in the body (help with arthritis)
  2. Reduce free radical activity
  3. Lower blood pressure
  4. Lower cholesterol
  5. Reduce bloating
  6. Help with weight loss by increasing metabolism and fat burning
  7. Decrease fasting insulin levels
  8. Decrease the severity of obesity-related fatty liver disease
  9. Transform your oral microbiome since it’s a strong antimicrobial (it will help with bad breath & reduce plague/cavities/tooth decay)
  10. Reduce the release of cortisol (a stress hormone)
  11. Reduce the risk of cancers, like breast, ovarian, stomach, pancreatic, prostate & oral cancer
  12. Help with hormone imbalance and estrogen metabolism
  13. Improve focus (with l-theanine)
  14. Prevent memory problems like Alzheimer’s and Dementia
  15. Prevent the development of Parkinson’s Disease

… and even INCREASE your lifespan! People who drink green tea traditionally live longer than those who don’t (if this doesn’t motivate you to drink more, I don’t know what will!)

On average, those who drink green tea live longer.

What’s The Best Way To Drink Green Tea?

  • Never drink it on an empty stomach – trust me! This can cause severe stomach aches & can harm your liver.
  • Avoid using boiling water (this can kill off many of the healthy nutrients). It’s best to boil the water then let it cool to your desired temperature. Brew the green tea at ~185 F and steep for about 2-3 minutes
  • Use freshly filtered water – like with a reverse osmosis system.
  • Opt for loose-leaf tea (to avoid microplastics in tea bags). My favorite stainless steel tea strainer is from Yoassi
    • Avoid using any tea bags that look “silky” – these oftentimes use plastic (yuck!).
  • Drink fresh-brewed (avoid those nasty pre-made bottled teas loaded with sugar and preservatives)
  • Stop drinking tea around ~3pm to avoid sleep disruptions
  • Drink it in non-toxic mugs free of lead & cadmium
  • Drink after meals (this helps avoid issues with iron absorption and your stomach will not be empty)
  • If you like the taste, swap matcha for your morning coffee! Matcha almond milk lattes are delicious!

Should You Be Worried About Caffeine Levels?

Green tea naturally contains caffeine (about 28mg per cup). For reference, a cup of coffee normally has 100-150 mg of caffeine and soda contains usually 30-60 mg. Green tea has less caffeine than other popular drinks, however it’s important to keep the caffeine level in mind, especially late at night. Matcha is much richer and will have higher amounts of caffeine compared to green tea leaves.

Green tea does contain some caffeine.

You can also buy decaffeinated green tea, however, it’s essential that it’s decaffeinated naturally with effervescence (aka carbonated water) instead of with chemicals. In other words, if a decaffeinated tea brand cannot specify how it’s decaffeinated, skip it and stick to caffeinated. Note that the decaffeination process kills off some nutrients within the tea – so caffeinated is best!

Are There Any Risks To Drinking Green Tea?

Green tea can hinder your body’s ability to absorb iron, so if you are anemic, consult your doctor. If you have a bleeding disorder, heart condition, diabetes, liver disease, or osteoporosis – consult your doctor.

For food safety purposes, be selective with where you are sourcing your tea. Pathogens like Salmonella, for instance, can contaminate your tea and if it’s not brewed at specific temperatures it will likely survive in your drink (gross). Suppliers should have clear food safety plans and risk assessments to ensure the production of their tea is safe. Salmonella is killed at temperatures above 150 F – I usually brew my green tea above this temperature. Make sure you store your tea in a cool, dry place to prevent any moisture growth.

As always, you know your body best – if you get bad side effects from drinking it, then opt for another drink. Too much of anything can be harmful to your body, so be sure to drink in moderation. All in all, the benefits far outweigh any risks.

Only opt for high-quality green tea or matcha.

How Much Can You Safely Drink?

Most people can handle at least 4 cups of green tea without experiencing any unwanted side effects (like stomach upset). It’s best to aim for 3-5 cups of green tea per day to reap many of its health benefits. Avoid drinking more than 8 cups per day.

If you’re breastfeeding or pregnant, green tea can still be great in limited amounts, but always consult your doctor!

What Green Tea Is Best?

By far, Pique Tea is the highest-quality green tea and matcha on the market! Their Green Tea Crystals and Sun Goddess Matcha are amazing. Pique is screened four times for any heavy metals, pesticides, mold, and radioactive isotopes… plus no added sugar or anything nasty!

Pique is a bit pricey (because it’s so high quality), so if you’re looking for something on the more affordable side, always opt for organic. Numi is one of my favorites.

Organic lemon is also a great addition – it can help preserve the catechins & add great flavor!

As you can see, this can be a great addition to your diet! It’s tea time – enjoy!
