What Is Hydrogen Water?

Hydrogen water is regular water (H2O) that’s been infused with extra hydrogen molecules (H2), which is said to give it antioxidant properties. The idea is that these extra hydrogen molecules can help fight oxidative stress in the body, potentially improving energy, reducing inflammation, and supporting overall health.ย

While hydrogen-rich water has been around for a while, it gained major attention after studies in Japan and Korea started showing potential health benefits. People are excited about it because it sounds like a natural way to boost wellness without relying on supplements or medications. [1, 2, 3]

What Are The Benefits Of Hydrogen Water?

Hydrogen water is being marketed as a miracle drink with a long list of potential health benefits, but how much of that is actually backed by science?ย

Some of the claims are pretty bold, like boosting energy, improving athletic performance, enhancing skin health, and even fighting cancer. While it sounds great, the reality is that the research is still very limited.

There are a few studies that show some positive effects, like one published in Medical Gas Research, which found that hydrogen water helped reduce muscle fatigue in athletes. Another study suggested it might help reduce inflammation in people with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. [4, 5]ย These results are interesting but not definitive. A lot more research is needed.ย

On the flip side, some studies have shown little to no benefits, which makes it clear that more research is needed to fully understand what hydrogen water can do. Itโ€™s definitely not the miracle cure some companies claim it to be, but there are enough encouraging signs to make it worth watching as more research comes out.

How Does A Hydrogen Water Bottle Work?

Hydrogen water bottles work by infusing regular water with molecular hydrogen (H2) through an electrolysis process. Inside the bottle, thereโ€™s typically a small electrolysis chamber where an electrical current splits water (H2O) into its basic components: hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen molecules are then dissolved into the water, creating hydrogen-rich water thatโ€™s ready for you to drink.

Some bottles also include features that go beyond just adding hydrogen. For example, certain brands claim to purify the water by using built-in filtration systems that remove impurities like chlorine, heavy metals, and other contaminants. Others may even alkalize the water by raising its pH level, making it more alkaline, which is another popular health trend.ย

If youโ€™re looking for truly filtered water, itโ€™s best to instead opt for reverse-osmosis filters, like AquaTru.ย

Water Ionizers vs. Hydrogen Water - Whatโ€™s the Difference?

Water ionizers and hydrogen water are NOT the same thing. While both impact the waterโ€™s potential โ€œhealth benefits,โ€ they use different processes.ย

Water Ionizers Changes pH

Purpose of Water Ionizers:

Water ionizers are designed to increase the pH of water by making it more alkaline. This process helps raise the concentration of hydroxide ions (OH-) while reducing hydrogen ions (H+), typically resulting in a pH range of 8-10. The goal is to produce water that may have health benefits due to its altered pH and molecular composition.

Process of Water Ionizers:

Water ionizers use electrolysis to separate water into alkaline and acidic components. This process involves running an electrical current through the water, which separates the water into hydroxide (OH-) and hydrogen (H+) ions. The alkaline side becomes rich in hydroxide ions, raising the water’s pH, while the acidic side increases hydrogen ion concentration.ย

This process is typically done in devices called water electrolyzers, which create electrolyzed-reduced water (ERW). This water is characterized by a higher pH, lower dissolved oxygen, and an increased concentration of molecular hydrogen (H2).

Potential Benefits of Water Ionizers:

Electrolyzed-reduced water (ERW) has been shown through research to have various therapeutic effects, primarily due to its molecular hydrogen content. ERW has antioxidant properties, protects DNA from oxidative damage, and may have anti-diabetic and anti-cancer effects. Some studies also suggest it can reduce oxidative stress, prevent damage to pancreatic cells, and protect against gastric injury.ย

These benefits are attributed to the molecular hydrogen (H2) produced during the electrolysis process, which acts as the primary therapeutic agent in ERW. However, the full understanding and recognition of its biological effects are still developing. [6]

Hydrogen Water Doesnโ€™t Change pH

Purpose of Hydrogen Water:

The primary goal of hydrogen water is to infuse molecular hydrogen (H2) into water without altering its pH. This process enhances the water with dissolved hydrogen molecules, which are believed to have potential health benefits.

Process of Hydrogen Water:

Hydrogen water is created by dissolving molecular hydrogen gas (H2) into water, typically through electrolysis or specialized hydrogen-infusing devices. This method results in a supersaturated solution of hydrogen molecules without affecting the water’s pH.ย

Because hydrogen molecules are extremely small, they can easily dissolve in and penetrate water, maintaining stability for a period of time.

Potential Benefits of Hydrogen Water:

Research suggests that hydrogen-rich water may offer various health benefits, including improvements in exercise performance & endurance, liver function, cardiovascular health, mental well-being, and oxidative stress reduction. Some studies indicate potential anti-aging properties and a protective effect against type 2 diabetes.ย

While initial findings are promising, more large-scale, well-structured clinical trials are needed to fully understand and confirm these benefits and the mechanisms behind them. [7]

What about Kangen Ionizers?

Kangen water ionizers are within a multi-level marketing (MLM) companyโ€ฆ which we are am NOT fans of. Some Kangen representatives misrepresent the product by claiming that itโ€™s purified and filtered – this is not the case. Kangen is an ionization machine, not a water purifier or filterโ€ฆ meaning it changes the pH level of the water.

What About โ€œStructured Waterโ€? Whatโ€™s the Difference?

“Structured water” is another term that often gets thrown around in discussions about waterโ€™s health benefits, and it can sometimes be confused with both water ionizers and hydrogen water. Itโ€™s also called โ€œhexagonal water.โ€

Purpose of Structured Water:

Structured water is believed to enhance cellular hydration, boost energy levels, and support detoxification. However, scientific studies on these claims are limited.

Process of Structured Water:

Structured water is created using devices that supposedly reorganize water molecules into a more stable and structured form. These devices may use vortexing, magnetic fields, light exposure, or specific minerals to alter the hydrogen bonding of water molecules.ย

Some forms of structured water claim to maintain their altered state for an extended period.

Potential Benefits of Structured Water:

Studies on animals consuming structured water for a month or more suggest potential benefits, including faster growth rates, reduced oxidative stress, improved blood sugar and insulin responses, better lipid profiles, enhanced sperm quality, and increased tissue conductivity. Further research is needed to understand its effects and mechanisms in humans. [8]
