What Is Prenuvo?

Prenuvo is a groundbreaking medical imaging technology that offers a comprehensive glimpse into the intricacies of your body’s internal landscape. It goes beyond traditional imaging methods by providing a contrast-free full-body scan that captures high-resolution images of your organs, tissues, and structures. Using a combination of advanced MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and AI-driven analysis, Prenuvo creates a detailed visual representation of your body’s health.

Unlike specific area scans, Prenuvo’s full body scan offers a holistic view, potentially allowing for early detection of various health conditions. This technology is particularly interesting because it provides an opportunity to catch subtle changes before they escalate into major issues. It’s centered around prevention. Prenuvo’s images can highlight changes at the cellular level, offering insights that could help in proactive health management.

Over 30 million MRI scans are performed every year in the United States. [1]

What Is An MRI?

An MRI, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is a sophisticated medical imaging technique used to create detailed and highly accurate images of the inside of the human body. It relies on a strong magnetic field and radio waves to generate these images. During an MRI scan, the patient lies inside a cylindrical machine, which uses a magnetic field to align the hydrogen atoms in the body’s tissues.

When the radio waves are applied, these atoms emit signals that are processed by a computer to produce cross-sectional images of the body’s internal structures, including organs, muscles, bones, and nerves. MRI is particularly valuable for diagnosing a wide range of conditions due to its non-invasive nature and its ability to provide clear insights into soft tissues that might not be as visible in other imaging methods.

Prenuvo vs. Regular MRI Scans

Let’s dive into the differences between a Prenuvo scan compared to a traditional MRI.

Prenuvo:

  • Offers a comprehensive full body scan using advanced MRI technology.
  • Captures high-resolution images of organs, tissues, and structures throughout the body.
    • According to Prenuvo: their scan gives 10x more high-resolution images than other MRI scans [2]
  • Utilizes AI-driven analysis for in-depth insights into health.
  • Focuses on potential early detection and subtle cellular changes.
  • Provides a holistic view of the body’s internal health landscape.
  • Aims to complement regular check-ups for proactive health management.

Early detection can save lives.

Regular MRI:

  • Typically focuses on specific areas or organs of concern… not typically the full body.
  • Utilizes magnetic fields to create detailed images of targeted body parts.
  • Widely used for diagnosing specific conditions, injuries, and abnormalities.
  • May not provide a complete view of overall health (not centered around holistic health)
  • Offers established diagnostic capabilities for specific medical scenarios.
  • Often recommended by medical professionals based on symptoms or clinical needs.

Pros & Cons of Prenuvo

Now let’s dive into the pros & cons of the scan…

Benefits & Pros of Prenuvo Full Body Scans

  • Can identify over 500+ common and rare conditions – you can find a general list here
    • It can even detect brain aneurysms before they even happen – it’s wild!
  • They offer multiple types of scans, at different price points (ranging from $999-$2499)
  • Extensive test report and app, which shows interactive videos of your scans (crazy cool!)
  • It’s contrast-free, unlike many MRIs which require an injection
  • You’re able to watch Netflix while getting the test done (a great distraction)
  • You can use FSA/HSA funds and payment plans
  • You don’t need a doctor to approve your MRI request – you can book it on your own.
  • The radiologist will give you a button to press if there are any questions or concerns that arise during the scan. They’re only a click away.
  • All results can be discussed with Prenuvo’s nurse practitioner after radiology review
  • They have multiple locations around the USA (and more coming!). They just opened an office in NYC!
  • Even if a result is benign or not harmful, it can provide important information to the patient. Ignorance isn’t always bliss!

… not to mention, the office space is beautiful, clean, and airy. You’re encouraged to relax and reset after the scan with a wide selection of drinks and snacks.

The biggest benefit: you don’t need a doctor’s script to order this test. If you want a full-body MRI, you can order it directly! This is a game-changer.

Risks & Cons of Prenuvo Scans

  • You have to lay completely still for over an hour (my legs fell asleep mid-way and it was very difficult to avoid shaking them awake)
  • If you’re claustrophobic, this may trigger anxiety. Your head is strapped into the machine and your body is covered with other blocks and straps.
  • It can be loud! Don’t be alarmed (like I was at first). There’s a lot of banging and beeping.
  • It is pricey and is not covered by insurance. This makes it inaccessible to most people.
    • Note: while the price is high for some, the cost of long-term care with a serious disease is significantly more expensive. It’s better to potentially catch any issues before they become too much of a problem.
  • The technician will run you through some breathing exercises for a couple of minutes. If you quickly get short-of-breath, these can be somewhat difficult.
  • If you’re prengnant, have metal implants, pacemakers, cochlear impants, prosthetics, or other conditions, you should avoid an MRI. Make sure to speak with your doctor beforehand to make sure you qualify.
  • There are some reports of false positive test reports – sometimes around 2%. [3] Always get a second opinion after receiving your test results. If you have a concerning result on your report, do NOT freak out about it! Minor abnormalities are normal and many results can be benign after further investigation.

Different Types of Prenuvo Findings

In the MRI report, the radiologist classifies the results into different levels – informational, minor, moderate, and serious. Let’s explain the differences:

  • Informational Findings:
    • These findings typically refer to observations that are within normal limits or have no significant clinical implications. These might include variations in anatomy or minor findings that are not associated with any health concerns.
    • While not medically concerning, these findings can still provide valuable baseline information about a person’s health.
  • Minor Findings:
    • Minor findings might include small abnormalities or variations that are unlikely to cause immediate health issues.
    • These could be small cysts, benign growths, or minor structural variations that don’t necessarily require immediate medical intervention but might warrant monitoring over time.
  • Moderate Findings:
    • Moderate findings usually indicate more noticeable abnormalities or conditions that might have some clinical significance. These findings could include larger masses, areas of inflammation, or other structural changes that could potentially impact a person’s health.
    • Medical follow-up or further testing might be recommended for moderate findings.
  • Serious Findings:
    • Serious findings are those that raise significant concerns about a person’s health. These could include the presence of tumors, evidence of serious diseases, significant structural abnormalities, or indications of acute health issues.
    • These findings often require immediate medical attention, further diagnostic tests, and treatment planning.

Prenuvo Steps - Start To Finish

  1. Initial Contact and Booking: I initiated contact with a Prenuvo representative – you can do this either on the phone or on their website. After talking about the scan options, I put down a deposit to secure the appointment.
  2. Pre-Scan Preparation: Before the MRI scan, I only drank clear liquids (which likely helps ensure a clear image during the scan). I also removed any jewelry or metal objects, as these can interfere with the MRI’s magnetic field.
  3. Check-In and Payment: On the day of your appointment, I arrived at the Prenuvo facility, checked in with the staff, confirming the appointment details and providing any necessary paperwork, as well as the remainder of the payment.
  4. Prenuvo Scan: Then it was scan time! I changed into scrubs that they provided and then was walked into the imaging room by the radiologist. The scan captured detailed images of my entire body, helping to provide a comprehensive assessment on my health.
  5. Imaging Assessment: After the scan was complete, the collected images were processed and assessed by radiologists. They reviewed the images to identify any findings that might require attention or further evaluation.
  6. Reporting and Follow-Up: After a couple of days, I received a comprehensive report based on my findings (which I could also see via the Prenuvo app). The report is prepared in a format that’s easily understandable for patients. The report can be expected usually within 10-15 business days, but mine only took a couple.

Prenuvo finds cancer in 1 out of every 20 people scanned. 95% of the time it’s only stage one!

My Experience At Prenuvo

Upon receiving my Prenuvo results, I learned SO much about my body. Most notably, I found out that I have two herniated discs in my spine (likely from sports) and a suspicious thyroid nodule. While thyroid nodules are very common, it was an important piece of information for me since my family has a history of thyroid cancer, hyperthyroidism, goiter, suspicious nodules, and more.

If I didn’t do a Prenuvo scan, I never would have known to follow up on the growth or status of a thyroid nodule before it potentially became more of a problem. I followed up with an endocrinologist to confirm that everything was benign (which it was, thankfully!) and now we can continue to monitor it long-term. I’m grateful for this information otherwise I would’ve never known it was there.

Yes… this is MY head! On the app, I was able to view a full video of the scans of my head and body.

You can learn more about pricing & scan options here.

Does Prenuvo Replace Doctor Visits?

No, Prenuvo does not replace your general physical or doctor visits. It doesn’t replace any clinical interpretation, medical history evaluations, physical evaluations, or healthcare advice. This test is intended to be a supplement to your doctor’s visits, not a replacement.

How Long Was The Prenuvo Scan?

If you accidentally move throughout the scan (like I did… oops), it can take a couple of extra minutes to re-take those images. Depending on the package, scans can takeย between 20 and 60 minutes.

Is There Radiation Exposure With Prenuvo?

No, unlike a CT scan or X-ray, MRIs do not use ionizing radiation. That being said, though, it can impact amniotic fluid temperature so it’s not recommended for pregnant women.

How Often Should You Do A Prenuvo Scan?

A follow-up scan is usually recommended every 12 months, but the price can certainly be a very important factor. Realistically, I will aim to get the scan done every 2-3 years, if possible unless insurance can cover part of the cost.

Final Thoughts - Prenuvo Review

Many nay-sayers believe that full-body MRI scans are unnecessary since they can be pricey and provide “too much information.” I completely disagree. To me, health ignorance isn’t bliss. I want to know what’s going on in my body and how I can best support it to thrive long-term.

With this scan, I was able to get an inside look at my body and how well I’m doing. Despite the cost, I thought it was worth it! I recommend it to all of those who are interested. Check them out!
