With allergy season in full swing, tissues are getting a lot of use!

Kleenex denies using PFAS in their US products, but residents in New Milford, CT say they’re being exposed to toxic chemicals.

While it’s unknown how to avoid forever chemicals altogether (since they’re ubiquitous), it’s best to opt for tissues that are:
1) Fragrance-free
2) Lotion-free
3) Bleach-free
4) Free of “anti-viral” ingredients

Some options: @cloud.paper @grovecollaborative or good old-fashioned cotton handkerchief.

Of course, don’t stress over using 100% “non-tox” tissues all the time… it’s not a big swap. But opting for a better option can still make a difference.

We need to hold companies accountable! We’ll be following this lawsuit. What do you think? ⬇️

BIG NEWS 🥳 In 2020, the F D A got commitments

BIG NEWS 🥳

In 2020, the F D A got commitments from manufacturers saying that they would phase out the use of *certain* PFAS in food packaging.

This phase out has officially been completed ✅

This is a major step in the right direction! 👏🏼

… But it’s NOT the end of PFAS. Here’s the catch:

While this reduces PFAS coatings used for grease-proofing, it doesn’t mean that all the packaging will be PFAS-free.

In fact, forever chemicals are often found in recycled paper products and inks too… There are many, many other sources of exposure aside from just packaging.

But a win is a win 🏆 So let’s celebrate this small victory towards progress.

Are there higher levels of PFAS in certain products? Yes.

Should you panic about it? Absolutely not.

A new study analyzed a combined total of over 700 people over a four-year period.

Burritos, fajitas, tacos, French fries and pizza (ultra-processed foods) made at home were associated with lower PFAS concentrations... but when made in restaurants the PFAS levels were higher. 🍕

Another win for home cooking.

Butter also likely increased PFAS levels (mostly because it’s sometimes wrapped in greaseproof paper). 🧈

Does this mean you should ditch butter? NO, absolutely not. In fact, it’s one of my favorite forms of fat... but this is something to keep in mind as we learn more about forever chemicals.

According to the article: “Among the main sources of food contamination are tainted water, greaseproof food wrappers, some plastics, pesticides, or farms where PFAS-tainted sewage sludge is spread as fertilizer.”
